국제학교 학생인데, 왜 여전히 ‘good’과 ‘bad’만 쓸까요?

국제학교와 대치동에서 공부한 똑똑한 아이들을 인터뷰할 때마다, 아이들의 풍부한 생각에 비해 사용할 수 있는 어휘의 폭이 지나치게 좁은 경우가 많아 늘 안타까움을 느낍니다. Whenever I interview bright students from international schools and Daechi, I am always disappointed by how often their vocabulary is far narrower than their ideas.
They may sound fluent and have wonderful ideas, yet still rely on the same simple words—good, bad, interesting, and important—to express almost everything. 영어는 유창하고 생각도 풍부하지만, 정작 자신의 생각을 표현할 때는 good, bad, interesting, important와 같은 익숙하고 단순한 단어에 계속 의존하는 경우가 많습니다.
Fluent English is not always powerful English. 유창한 영어가 반드시 힘 있는 영어를 의미하지는 않습니다. Fortunately, building a strong vocabulary does not need to be complicated. Words simply need to be learned memorably, recalled repeatedly and used for a real purpose. 다행히 탄탄한 어휘력을 기르는 방법은 복잡하지 않습니다. 단어를 기억에 남게 배우고, 반복해서 떠올리고, 실제 표현에 계속 사용하면 됩니다. After examining more than 20,000 research citations, the US National Reading Panel reached the same practical conclusion: repeated exposure, rich contexts, active participation and computer-based practice all help children acquire vocabulary. That is exactly what our Sunday Wordly Wise students have been doing. 이것이 바로 Jool 일요일 Wordly Wise 학생들이 해온 학습입니다. 20 weeks. 20 units. Around 300 words. Wordly Wise 5—completed. 20주. 20개 유닛. 약 300개의 단어. Wordly Wise 5 완주. They are now moving on to Wordly Wise 6, and I am enormously proud of them. They are enthusiastic, industrious and genuinely lovely children. They make me look forward to Sundays. 이제 아이들은 Wordly Wise 6로 나아갑니다. 열정적이고 성실하며 정말 사랑스러운 아이들이 너무나 자랑스럽습니다. 이 아이들 덕분에 저는 매주 일요일을 기다리게 됩니다. Well done: Max, Yuna, Henry, Jiyu, Jiyun, Yoonah, and Chaehyeon. =) To celebrate their achievement, I am sharing two resources with every Jool family. 1. Practise all 300 words on Gimkit: 👉 300개 어휘 챌린지 시작하기 2. The Right Word Protocol 활용하기 - Whenever your child is about to write a simple word such as good or bad, they look at the questions on the left, find the meaning that matches their idea and choose a more precise word from the right. 아이가 good이나 bad처럼 단순한 단어를 쓰려고 할 때, 왼쪽의 질문 중 자신의 생각과 맞는 것을 찾고 오른쪽에서 더욱 정확한 단어를 고르면 됩니다. It takes only seconds, but even children with weak vocabulary begin writing and sounding much stronger remarkably quickly. 몇 초밖에 걸리지 않지만, 어휘력이 부족했던 아이들도 놀라울 정도로 빠르게 더 정확하고 수준 높은 표현을 사용하기 시작합니다. Print the PDF, keep it beside your child and make sure they use it whenever they write. PDF를 출력해 아이 옆에 두고, 글을 쓸 때마다 반드시 활용할 수 있도록 해주세요.
